By the time thru-hikers get to Washington they're pretty spread out.  The
first ones show up in early August and the last ones don't get there until
late September.  If you're talking about starting at Cascade Locks, I'd
probably choose somewhere around the third week of August to balance hiker
sightings vs. weather issues.
