Mike,Water treatment among long distance hikers is a funny thing. Did you
know that 90% of the population is immune to giardia... If you doubt this
like I did there is some literature somewhere on the internet, firetoung pct
08 made sure I read it. He carried around a pamphlet he made with the info
on it.
Now to answer your question, IMO the best filter out there is a timberline
filter http://www.timberlinefilters.com/filters.html i've never seen anyone
besides my self carry one but it is the cats meow. I talk about them so
much i should be a rep. It is the lightest filter out there, well maybe,
and it's inexpensive to boot. Did i mention it filters fast as lightning.
It also gets rid of all of your diseases you were worried about. he owner
of the company is great too. The only downside is that you can not let it
freeze, very silty glacial run off slows things down and sometimes you need
to dig a little hole to sit the filter down in.
During my hike I carried it and some AM as a back up, after a while I just
stopped filtering and never had any problems. I encourage you to check it
out, it'll be well worth your time.
Good luck
