[pct-l] a few questions

The chipmunks and squirrels can be fierce in some spots, pouncing from ambush when least expected. They are even known to steal food from your plate as you are eating. (Brazen hussies!)

Camp-robbing Sellars Jays will swoop in and grab whatever food you foolishly leave lying on the ground - or on your head, shoulder, or hand.

Those sneaky Marmots will pose for pictures while behind you, their accomplices raid your pack.

Kamakazi skeeters will assault you from the skies. And why not? You're a walking buffet.

Yogi and BooBoo will play night games with you in Yosemite.

For all practical purposes, your friend's pistol will be ineffective against them all. It will however, get the immediate attention of other hikers and especially the rangers he meets or to whom someone reports his carrying. They take such things very seriously in Yosemite, and many of their rangers are law enforcement types with their own guns and arrest powers.
