Pertex is very thin, lightweight nylon in a ripstop pattern that's very
tough for its weight. It comes in different flavors, Quantum and Microlight
being the most widely used for sleeping bags and apparel. Both are quite
similar, Quantum being a bit lighter and Microlight having the edge on
resistance.

Pertex fabrics feel silky and smooth. Quantum/Microlight are reasonably
windproof and breathe well. They don't have much texture so they appear
soaked when they get wet (like after washing or in the back area when
wearing under a backpack while hiking) but they dry extremely quick.
They're very lightweight and much more durable than they look like, they
stand well to regular wear on the trail.

Windshirts add versatility for little weight and versatility is a very good
thing for a long trail where conditions will vary. It allows you to wear
your rain gear only when it's actually raining hence keeping its
performance for when your really need it (that limited breathability that
gets compromised by use) and allowing you to take a lightweight, maybe not
so durable version. Also you don't have to cope with the limited
breathability of rain gear most of the time. Windshirts are bugproof and
can be worn as a base layer (even though they're not as nice feeling as a
real base layer).
