Cris,

I agree that there is a big risk taking a horse on the trail without a lot
of time together to understand the horse.  It would be far better to tqke a
horse that had proven itself with you over a long period.  However, the
first 140 miles or so north from Campo provide as good a place to train
together as anywhere.  Roads and horse ranches are always close by.  There
are people who have ridden long distances on the PCT with horses they picked
up just as they started or along the way. Of course, these were very
determined and resourceful people with much horse-savvy.

I keep in mind that the Californios often traveled our area by catching the
most convenient horse (semi-wild), then turning him loose and catching
another when the current mount got tired.  So it is possible for normal
people who develop the skills (how I wish I could get that good).
