Hi Drew,

What to carry depends in large part on whether you can be certain in
predicting the outcome of every hike. (Ask which emergency just won't happen
to you this time?)

These are the essentials that I carry on every hike. Even the short ones.

I created this version for my clinics at REI and other outdoor seminars.

The "TION" words - pronounced "shun" as in the clues to describe essential
gear - just in case you can't remember lists.

NAVIGATION - map, compass, (know how to use them), the route description,
GPS

NUTRITION - Food for each day plus one - (be able to return with some food)

ILLUMINATION - Headlamp w/fresh batteries

HYDRATION - Water bottles (full) plus extra, or water treatment system, or a
purifying filter

IGNITION - Matches, lighter, fire starter, or stove w/full fuel
bottle/canister

RADIATION - Sun protection hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, lip balm

LAYERATION - (OK, don't look in Webster's for this one) Base layer
(wicking), insulation layer, raingear or soft-shell outerwear

MEDICATION - First aid kit w/ fresh supplies, instructions, and the
knowledge to use them; your own daily meds

PROTECTION - Shelter, space blanket, or sil-tarp can provide immediate sun
or rain protection for yourself or accident victims

STABILIZATION - Trekking poles to use for third leg, mono-pod, shelter pole,
cougar and bear defense, poison oak deflector, general poking and irritating
of small creatures

RECREATION - Emergency booklets, signal whistle, signal mirror, knife,
multi-tool, cord

I hope this helps.

Hasta la pasta.

Amanda said she can help other with "The Ten Essentials" and Leave No Trace.
Maybe I'm getting senile, but what are the ten essentials according to the
PCT Hikers?

"I agree with Matt. I always use water to train with. With my water bottle
filled backpack I am able to freely offer them a litter or two and save them
serious discomfort, or worse. This often becomes an educational opportunity
for hiking with the ten essentials and Leave No Trace."
