This is from a long-time lurker and infrequent poster. My friends, Courtenay and Doug Schurmann, have just published a new book on training for the outdoor athlete. It includes specific training programs for mountaineering, cross-country skiing and backpacking. There are charts that let you personalize your own training program depending the the length of the trip and the time you have to prepare (and we've all got a lot of time at the moment). I've been using it and found it is clear and informative. Here's a link for more information:

If you were at the PCT Trailfest in Seattle in 2007, they were the couple that gave a trail class on hiker fitness. Courtenay also wrote the chapter on fitness in "Mountaineering: Freedom of the Hills," so she knows what she's talking about.
