That was one big heavy deer then.  It was more of a King Kong type sound and less jittery than a deer.  It could have been a deer, but whatever it was was very heavy.  I say it was either a bear or Bigfoot.  Yeah, that's it, Bigfoot!

Good afternoon, Fuzz,

I was once awakened from a sound sleep by someone – who should best remain unnamed – frantically whispering, “Hey, wake up.  I hear a noise. I think I hear a bear out there!”  Half drowsy I replied, “Bears have big, soft, fuzzy feet.  If there was a bear out there you probably wouldn’t hear a thing.”

Huge mistake.  From then on all night it was, “Hey, wake up.  I don’t hear anything. There must be a bear out there!”

If you heard clomping-around, there’s a good chance a deer got into the chips.  They love those things, particularly around established campsites.

At a campground in the Coast Range between Portland and Tillamook, so not on the PCT, after having some beers and burgers, I went to sleep in the tent having left part of a bag of chips out on the picknick table.  I know, that's not very bright.  In the night I was woken up by heavy stepping sounds.  It sounded as if a really big heavy guy with workboots was plodding around the table and then off down the very short trail towards the river.  After a few minutes of listening further I didn't hear anything else so I went back to sleep.  In the morning I found the chip bag on the ground in the bushes near the trail to the river.
