Good afternoon, Darren,
I'm a tarp user and I have two slightly different tarps. The one I use the
most is built exactly per TrailDad's Poncho plans shown at:
http://royrobinson.homestead.com/. It is my shelter in the rare instances I
need one, and it is the only raingear I normally carry. It is 64" wide
because that's as wide as a normal fabric roll.
I also built a larger 79" wide model without the poncho hood. It also has
slightly peaked ends rather than being a pure rectangle. I haven't used it
as much. It's for use when I want more area under cover and when I carry
separate raingear. That width necessitates a seam down the ridgeline which
is a bit of a pain in the exhaust system.
TrailDad shows it pitched as a lean-to – and I've done that some – but I
prefer a regular pup tent type setup. I stake the rear low, with the
corners on the ground, while the front is higher with those corners 6"-8"
off the ground.
