Yes, if you don't have enough water you can be miserable or worse.  
However, if you consistently have 2 liters extra than you need, you  
can also be miserable. Water is heavy.

My problem was that I never quite got it into my head that 20+ miles  
was just one day of hiking. So if water was 20 miles apart, did I  
need to carry 5 liters? No, because I would never drink that much in  
a day (some people do, some people drink even more, but I do not. If  
I did I would probably die.)

And it did not occur to me that a whole liter could be consumed at  
the water source, relieving me of carting around that liter of water  
as well.

I don't know why I was so dense about this, but I was. And I will  
probably continue to be, but it is my goal to reduce weight of excess  
water in my pack.
