I am not sure what Patti finds "disgusting" but i think she is wrong on what is the cheapest way to ship. I just ran a test, using the online calculators for the Post Office (USPS), UPS and Fed Ex. According to those it costs :

USPS -
San Diego to Lone Pine - 8 pounds - parcel post - $8.03
Portland to Lone Pine - 2 pounds - Parcel Post - $5.94

UPS -
San Diego to Lone Pine - 8 pounds - ground - $13.85
Portland to Lone Pine - 2 pounds - ground - $13.12

FedEx -
San Diego to Lone Pine - 8 pounds - ground? 3 day - $12.69
Portland to Lone Pine - 2 pounds - ground? (slow) - #12.04

I choose Lone Pine because it is a typical pick-up point, although I checked other shipping points and destinations to make sure the rates hold.

I think that the USPS is a clear winner, although every package is different, and you'll have to check what is most applicable. There are places where UPS won't work, or the USPS won't work, or where you need it in a hurry (again the USPS is usually cheaper). Also, REI, Zappos, etc. might usually ship with UPS, but you can ask to have it shipped another method - USPS Priority can be forwarded. UPS cannot.

I also think that disparaging comments about the Post Office being reliable are questionable. The Post Office is amazing, and does a great job. Remember that this is your local letter carrier, as well as Adell hauling the mail from the boat at Stehekin.  To say nothing of the folks taking your photos at Big Bear, so that you can have your pic on the PO wall...

check for yourself -
