Yahoo has a similar product called FireEagle that has been up for awhile.
For both, you need a special applicaton on your phone (if supported) and
your phone will need to be turned on. Having your phone turned on all the
time may not be desirable for a hiker. Further, cell reception isn't
constant and downright sparse in some areas.
If folks have a real interest in this, I can incorporate this into the
postholer journals and/or maps as an opt-in feature.
For now, all postholer journalists have the ability to show their 'daily'
location on the interactive google PCT map using a latitude/longitude, which
may be enough location resolution for most folks. Of course, you can add
journal entries remotely as well as location.
