Personally I think there needs to be more reality checks on this list.
Call it fear mongering if you will, but I would rather be responsible
for someone being over prepared than dead.
I've seen the Middle Fork of the Kern, and the North Fork as well (in
late July of a high snow year), running so high and hard that it would
challenge a river raft. The trail fords were simply not crossable for
anyone save an Olympic swimmer with SCUBA gear. Knowing such conditions
are possible give one a chance to educate themselves and plan, including
developing Plan B (and C and D).
No one is trying to put a damper on anyone's adventure, but drowning
would sure dampen anyone's.
