Edan,
The John Muir Trail is the only trail going east from Crabtree Meadow.
It climbs past Guitar Lake almost to Trail Crest where a side trail
goes north to Mt Whitney (technically the side trail is still the John
Muir Trail). It is the only trail up, so you will return to Crabtree
the same way you came.
If you continue past the Whitney side trail you go east over Trail
Crest (into the Whitney Zone permit required area) down 99 switchbacks
and eventually descend 5,200 feet to Whitney Portal.
I was not up there in 2008, but I have made the trip many times in
prior years. Approaching from the west I never saw any signs about
permits, but actually everyone is required to have a permit. The
question is what kind, and if something other than the PCT permit is
required.
