[pct-l] meddling NPS

First off, to all the younger generation out there... I wasn't trying to imply that ALL youths were lazy, overweight  etc...  but there seem to be more then when I grew up... I'm just inspired by the ones that don't just sit behind the TV, tech. games and so forth. I sincerely apologize if you took it that way...
Next.... I understood the paragraph to say the kids would charge the hiker to carry their packs out for them at a $200 charge. To me this is no different then say hiking Mt. Everest and the Sherpas getting paid to carry gear/food up the mountain.

You can't be serious. I work hard for everything I have. Between bills and living it took me awhile to save up for all my hiking gear. I am 23 so I am of a younger generation. If those kids took my gear I would take a baseball bat to them. They should know right from wrong. That is not a honest way to make money. Can't even believe that sentence is in this story. I have worked since 15. Even when I got laid off I still found a real honest way to pay my bills even if I had to sale things of mine. I am glad the forest rangers are there to protect what I have worked hard to get. Maybe the kids should go steal a car or rob a bank. Its honest work right hahaha

Jim said
"The ranger we spoke with is also a high school soccer coach. A couple of
years ago several members of his team (unbeknownst to him), were hiking down
to Phantom Ranch and carrying out "hiker" backpacks at $200 a pop. And there
were plenty of takers. One young man was making two trips per day! After a
few weeks, the Park Superintendent got wind of this new "service" and put an
end to it."

One would think that the forest service would appriciate that the kids were just out trying to earn some HONEST money and not out spraying graffitti, or worse yet, getting the guns out to play (who's the biggest and badest and live to tell.)
I personally commend the kids for coming up with a way to earn themselves some honest money and a bonus... staying in shape (specially with all the young, lazy, overweight kids these days...)
WOW!!!   ANAL is all I can say for the Park Superintendent!
