Canada was forced to link their border cross data with US and require passports.

This was all put into effect by homeland security after 911.
Canada was happy with the drivers license until USA strong armed the Canadian
immigration service, with threats of border crossing changes that would effect
Canadians negatively.
The US  border cross is much tougher, with no such options as one time payments
for incursions by people with dui etc or criminal convictions.
advising people to sneak across the border does them no favors.
does anyone think the border folks on both sides of the border dont monitor this
list............
If you think you have convictions that bar you from entering Canada, dont do
it.
the border crossing jack boots on both side have no sense of humor.
sneaking across with out proper authorization, papers etc. will get you arrested
and deported with a criminal conviction.
Is this really worth it.
The US border police's use of  the new unpiloted drones was in full swing this
year along the border with Canada....fully funded....by the US homeland
security.
Ahhhh can you smell the freedom.................
