I never had or needed a spot either, when I hiked the PCT in the 
eighties. They didnt have em.  map and compass eh.
I have mine mainly for the exploits I make into the Mojave desert.
Usually I'm deep in, and unlike the sierras, when your down and out in 
august in the deep in the Mojave desert, you have 4 days tops and your 
done.
no hiking down to a spring  or a resupply  point.
but you have the checking with the family point right on the button.
my wife feels better  when I'm way out in the desert alone.
I'm not a spring chicken any more. besides I cant die until my daughter 
finishes college, daddy banks eh.
