We hit Russell Creek about 1:30 in the afternoon. If you go upstream about
50 yards, it splits with an island in between. It's nothing to be careless
about, but we waded across using hiking poles with no problems - deepest was
not quite to the knee. Another couple going the opposite direction rock
hopped across and stayed dry, but I didn't want to risk a slip. A third
couple that we had met earlier had crossed before 11 several days earlier
and said it was no problem. They came back on their return trip and crossed
shortly after we did. They were amazed at the increase in volume.

While I haven't yet seen anything on www.inciweb.org , I saw first-hand that
the Station Fire, burning in the San Gabriel Mountains, has reached the PCT.
At approximately 5:00 p.m., the fire was on the flanks of Mt. Gleason, and
under a quarter mile from the North Fork Ranger Station. Per Todd, the
volunteer manning the ranger station, the fire is expected to reach
Messenger Flats and firefighters believe it may go all the way to the
Antelope Valley. I could not see, nor does the InciWeb site show, what the
scope of the fire is and how broad the fire line, and therefore it is
difficult to see how much of the trail may be affected in Section D.

There is a 'little' info re. the Station fire on the CAL FIRE site:
<http://cdfdata.fire.ca.gov/incidents/incidents_current> ...

California is burning up once again unfortunately - numerous large fires this
summer throughout the state...
I hope for the best to all concerned and involved near any of the fires...

Just wanted to let you all know that there is a pretty serious trail closure
underway right now on Section J north of Snoqualmie Pass because of a long
burning fire that has recently started to flare up again. Looking at the maps
the detour to get around the fire will probably add at least a day onto most
hiker's passage through this section. This closure extends high enough that you
cannot approach Spectacle Lake as best as I can tell. It was really smokey most
of the day and the fire is creating its own weather.

Be careful out there, but enjoy the views. Incredible world we live in for
sure.

I saw a report on another board that they are evacuating Soledad Canyon
between Agua Dulce and Indian Canyon (which is where the PCT meets
Soledad Canyon). I haven't been able to confirm this. Nothing on PCTA
website but I would consider Section D closed from Agua Dulce at least
as far east (trail south) as Three Points.

I am moving to no cooking on the trail.? LaraBars and ProBars are two items that
will be in my no-cook pantry.? I noticed over at REI on line that they have a
sale of ProBars at $2.39 each.? Normally they are around $3.00+ each.? Not a bad
sale.

I might have to get a couple of cases for all the hard-core backpacking I have
to do the rest of this year.

Right now I am into rounding out my no-cook pantry full of good organic items
for the trail.? I plan to snack all day and not have any set meals.? This will
work much better for me and my health requirements.

AsABat,

I was able to estimate the fire bounds (inciweb.org site) to be from Mill Creek
Summit Ranger Station (about mile 419) to Mattox Canyon (about mile marker 440).
It appears that the northern fire line runs partly west along Mt. Gleason Road
or Road 3N17 from the Mill Creek Summit Ranger Station.

If anyone has any better information please post.

Paul
