I have used one of these for a while now. I use it for text messages and keep it for emergency call usage which fortunately so far has not been needed. Expensive yes......but how much is a life worth? E mail me if you wish but I am out on the trail. 
Also these sort of gadgets are no substitute for experience and good decision making.
