I have a set of gossamer gear hipbelt pockets, they are great.  In fact, I
use them around town to carry small electronics.

As some packs come with belt pockets on the hipbelt or with annoyingly 
small pockets that really hold nothing of value, I found another great 
place for hipbelt pockets that adapt to nearly any pack made. These are 
made by Granite Gear- weigh about an oz each and sell for about 20 bux 
each. They are padded on both sides, making them useful for electronics, 
and come with water- resistant zips. They are actually large enough to 
hold all your goodies you could want for the hiking day- energy bars, 
camera, lip gloss, your cell phone, ipod, and with room left over! Kinda 
spendy, but then you get what you pay for. ;-)

lightweight packs is they don't usually have a top pocket for those kinds of
items any more.  I like having them accessible.  Doesn't help with weight
much - but it does make life easier.
