Cuben Fiber is UV "resistent" according to
http://www.cubictechnology.com/. If you want shade from a cuben fiber
tarp then simply fold it in half to double the sun blockage. I made a
8'x10' cuben fiber tarp that I can fold into half twice for a sun shade
setup.
My 8'x10' tarp double glued with Loctite Hysol weighs 5.5oz. Guy wires,
stakes, and a Tyvek ground cloth brings the total to 15 oz and change.
All in all, very pricey but it is very strong and lightweight. I will
mail myself a couple of replacement Tyvek ground sheets. I have also
pre-writen hitch hiking signs on my Tyvek sheets but that is off topic.
Either way, combine your ground sheet with the tarp and you will surely
get the shade you need.
Regards,
More Money than Sense Matthew

Sean,
IDR UR gonna get much lighter than those Mylar blankets...and those are
cheap...but they aren't too durable...something that you might be
interested in using instead is either Reflective Window Tinting or
Reflective plastic used for hydroponics & indoor gardens. These are
usually a metalized polyester & are VERY tough! Not sure how UV
resistant they are so IDK how long they would last as far as sun
exposure goes...but they are tough enough to be used & repacked many
times.

As there can be a lack of shade in some desert sections, I was thinking
of getting a mylar sheet that I could attach to the top of my cuben
fiber tarp.
I was wondering if there was something ligher weight than a emergency
space blanket that would work and where I could buy it.
