Like I think many/most (?), I too used an empty plastic soda bottle for HEET
or denatured alcohol, and this was pretty much always enough, though this
could depend on how often you anticipate refilling at trail towns or trail
angel's.  The latter was a couple of times very nice, not having to buy a
larger quantity than needed.

I personally always transferred my HEET from the original yellow bottle.
Maybe it's just me, but I didn't trust the seal of the cap on those after it
had first been opened.
My own process was to put a plastic soda bottle partially filled with
alcohol fuel inside a gallon ziplock (peace of mind) and carry this in
external mesh on my backpack.  Great system, I'd do the same again.
