It seems to me he is determined to do it whether or not you provided any
assistance

Some people are looking to test their limits risk be dammed.

Most people say Canyoneering is risky, I say it is risky but I manage
that risk... I look back on what I've done in the past and now say that
was stupid, I could have been killed. There are many things I'd never do
now without a rope, it is just too risky...

I have other friends who seem to think if you are using a rope it is
risky, but do insane free climbs with death defying exposures.

WWJMD?
Good question

I think you did the right thing, he'll have time to ponder it, perhaps
he'll turn back, perhaps he'll push on and make it, perhaps he'll not
make it.

It isn't your responsibility, he'll certainly look back on it some day
and say "I could have been killed!"
