I have been watching and reading a lot of the newspaper articles and comments about this tragic experience that I and my hiking partners went through.?? Please let me tell you that you can't believe everything you read.? At sometime it might be appropriate to detail this story from a person that was there, but right now the pain of losing a hiking partner prevents me from doing this.? I just wish that you would keep Phyllis's family in your prayers as they are going through this loss.? Thank you.? Karen Lafferty

So I've seen here in this thread lots of folks saying that DEET is a last
resort for many reasons. It isn't a resort at all for me as I, too, have a
severe reaction to it when I apply it to my skin and a lesser one in sinus
headache, when I apply it to my clothes or smell it on others. The headache
is almost as bad as I get with some of the perfumes I get a whiff of from
day hikers and tourists in towns (I get them in my regular life too).

Regardless of all this, my concern continues to be; do any of the people who
wear DEET, or even sunblock, do you wash it off before you put your
hands/body in the water sources?? I asked that of a group of boy scouts that
were foul with DEET and sunblock, and their 'leader' smiled ruefully at them
and said "See? I'm not the only one." (or words to that effect) So, do you?
do you even remember that you've put something on your hands and body that
might harm the water source and hence the little creatures, frogs, water
bugs, fish??

Okay, sorry but that has bugged me for years!!! And just in case someone is
going to ask me, yes I do remember, I wash each night and if I'm going to
use sunblock, I try to get my water before the need of sunblock has arisen,
if not, I clean my hands, away from the water source, then get the water.
Yep, pretty much a weird human about this one. I also only used sunblock in
SoCal last year for the first week or so and the first few days this year in
NoCal! (I know I can still get skin cancer, but. . .)

Have a great Monday all!! Thanks for letting me vent on DEET and water
sources!

Switchback will be leaving Friday for the Eastern Sierras.  Even while we speak, property is being boarded up like a hurricane is coming.  A category 5 hurricane.  They are right.  Nothing but destruction will be left in my wake.

I am headed solo into Lyle Canyon in Yosemite and the PCT.  Indians are sending smoke signal across the Sierras to form up war parties for the attack on Fort Switchback when I set up my campsite.  No problem.  Bears and mountain lions are streaming down from the high country for an assault.  No problem.  Female Terminator Leadership Types (liquid metal advance proto types) are forming up posses to collect the bounty/reward on Switchback's head.  No problem.  Mother Nature is bringing in storm fronts from the Pacific northwest.  No problem.

I just got my prehike pedicure.  I am excited.  I am ready.  Bring it on.

What's that thingy on top that looks like a stem?  A skyhook?  She'd sure
scare critters away, she's about twice her normal height, and a bit wider
too.  Not bad.........

I'd be happy to help, but unfortunately will be traveling during that time, so sorry!  I'm sort of the local trail angel.  Belden is about 2 hours on highway 70 from Oroville/Marysville/Yuba City where you could catch a bus or amtrak.  If you were to end that section at highway 36 near Chester, you would need to go west on highway 36 to Red Bluff on highway 5 for train or bus.

I'm sorry I can't help - would have loved to be of assistance.

Interestingly enough, I lived in WA state for 5 years and the mossies
there didn't even bother me-- however, moving back to ND proved to be a
horse of a different color. MN is also a fun state for mossies, and in
the springtime here in ND and in MN they swarm so heavily it's like
black clouds in the skies- the lil buggers will cart you off. The black
flies and horse flies aren't quite so fast but they too swarm in black
clouds and their bites are nas-ty if they do catch up to you. *ouch*

Deet? That's like steak sauce to them. *L*  And West Nile is pretty
prevalent up here too- one bite can do it. Had that 6 years ago..NOT a
pleasant experience- it's like the worst case of the flu you have ever
had.....X 10.

So, remember, getting bitten can have consequences that you don't want.
Protect yourselves if you can.

Soul Sista

I understand some people's preference for camouflage, but trying to look like the mountain itself?? Now that is hard core hiker trash, with flair!

Howdy everyone,

Birdie and I are looking for info or assistance on getting a shuttle to
Campo on 1/3/09.  We will be doing a 2 week winter section hike as far as
we can get, hopefully Idyllwild.  Thanks, peace,
