You would actually hitch west to Hwy 243 from the Hwy 74 trailhead.

>From there, I am not certain why you would hitch all the way to Black Mountain Road unless you were looking to miss all of Fuller Ridge.  Why not hitch just a mile or so north of Idyllwild and go up the Deer Springs Trail or even a bit further north on 243 and take the Marion Mountain Trail?  At least this way you would have an opportunity to hike Fuller Ridge.
