Agreed on Yaktrax.  Maybe good for walking on icy roads, but they come off
too easily and don't do much in spring snow conditions.  

While I have no personal experience with the following specific suggestion
(the somewhat similar type I have are no longer sold), I'd suggest something
like a 6-point aluminum crampon as a compromise, such as these:
