But a passport might be a good alternative to trying to keep my birth
certificate from getting lost or damaged.

It looks like there is a less expensive passport card that serves as a
passport for people entering the US from Canada or Mexico. That would be
a good way to go if one is not anticipating flying overseas in the near
future.
