SB,
You might want to look into the inflatable "air bag jackets" that inflate when a tether line clipped to the bike, is dislodged. It should help when you hit the pavement. Very handy.

Switchback replies: I am 61 years old too. I will be at the April Kickoff and would be glad to talk to you about this important subject. Here are my latest thoughts.
Currently, I am considering the Harley-Davidson CrossBones or may be the new Rocker model motorcycles (www.harley-davidson.com). I plan to become, Switchback, the Road Pirate. Only kidding. I have also been looking at the new Honda GoldWing too. Believe it or not, they came out with an air bag on their top model this year.
I am now trying to figure out how to be a Trail Angel with a motorcycle. It might work. At least I know that the hot hiker babes will be all over me --- the MountainMan Biker mystique. They can't resist the black leathers, two day old beard and the primeval sound of the iron horse you are riding hard on. They can't wait to hop on the back and head into the wind (bugs too if you don't have a windshield) with the outlaw Pirate --- the trailtown sacking one percenter.
See you soon, your pal, Switchback the Road Pirate
