Yes, and other hikers need to stiffen their backbones and call out hikers
who are behaving badly, even though that goes against the grain for most
people on a thru-hike.  

 

Silence implies consent.

You are right with your thoughts. Doesn't hurt to educate the new ones. With
any luck the seasoned hikers will help remind the selfish ones on the
responsible way they should be acting. Can't hurt. If it's not discussed it
will become accepted behavior. You know how "kids" push the limits with
their parents. It's only human nature..........:)

It doesn't really matter what forum it is . . . even if those who need to
hear the message are at the KO, on this list-post, or anywhere else, they
won't pay attention and don't think the message applies to them.  The people
who don't really need to hear it will be the ones paying rapt attention.  We
can talk and write about it all we want, but it's human nature and the law
of averages at work.
