Google News is a great news archive. With some creative Google-fu, you can find articles on many articles about long distance hikers.

Here is an example of a google news seach on 
"pacific crest trail" backpacker. 

I chose the 2000-07 archive option. You could tweak further, but this example is a quick
and dirty one:
