I've got a silly question. Not being a hiker myself........if a bear smells
your food.....and you are sleeping with it ....is he really going to push
you away to get to your food and not go for you too ??

I am 26 years old. I'm an ultra lighter, I carry about 16-19 lbs when fully
loaded for 6 days of hiking. I've done back-to-back 20 mile hikes during
training season. Only takes about 8 hours to hike 20 miles when I'm just
casually strolling (on mostly flat ground). I could have done it faster,
but I took a twenty minute break for lunch, and a ten minute break because I
felt like doing some yoga. The temperature varied between 40 degree (F) and
15 degrees (over night). I would have hiked further those days, but I left
late in the afternoon, so it got dark early. I stretched well and didn't
experience any soreness (in fact, I just wanted to keep walking).

Based on this (and one other long hike during my training period) I estimate
I can cover 40 miles a day, 6 days a week on flat ground. Since not much of
the PCT is actually flat, and because I like to take my time and enjoy the
scenerey, I'll probably only cover about 30 miles a day on average. I know
this is above average, but I carry much lighter gear, I have long legs, I
know my body very well, and I walk alot (and up and down a lot of hills) on
a daily basis.

Hope it helps.

Does anyone know if Kearsharge Lakes is open for camping?

I recall that Bullfrog has been closed to camping for recovery concerns...

At least deep in the Kern Trench, distant from "tourists" and cars, as
evidenced by deeply clawed tree trunks up past 30 feet, large broken limbs
and chewed off snags of rope twenty feet up, the bears have figured out bear
bagging.

Bear cans. Just use them.

  _____

My neighbor brought me the Sports Section of the Idaho Statesman newspaper
and Here on the back page was a full page article and a great picture of
Billy Goat and the article was all about him and Meadow Mary and his son and
of course his philosophy of life. I think it was picked up from a Los
Angeles Paper. It was fun to read and we do not usually get things about the
Pacific Crest trail in our papers. Whohooo..

I originally thought that Claire's idea was a good one, but there are some real problems. I stopped at the only drugstore in Big Bear City/Lake that had a digital (Kodak) machine. It was going to require not one, but five CD's to burn the 1.3 gigs that my card held... Then, to top it off - the machine would only transfer and burn the JPEG files, not the several short movies I had made. I mailed the card home instead. I think that carrying extra cards, and then mailing them home is the best option. I also think that carrying 2 or 4 gig cards is important - they are cheap and they will perform for a long time. I also think that people over estimate how many photos they take. I have a very easy set up with my camera close at home, but rarely shot more than 30-40 photos per day. It is easy to shoot 100 on the first day in new terrain, but when you go thru similar terrain 4 or 5 days later, you will probably not take so many shots....

I just returned from hiking near Red's Meadow in Yosemite (btw, I'm not a
PCT hiker -yet- just a PCT dad). A ranger there told me about a recent
close encounter between a PCT hiker and a bear: The hiker had too much food
to stuff in the bearproof canister, so she kept the surplus by herself as
she slept. The bear found it, politely pushed her aside & took the food.
:)

I swear I did'nt make this up (but maybe somebody else up the "telephone
line" did? I just had to answer your email because the coincidence is
eerie!)

I have enjoyed this thread thourouly. It is great to see a list
serve that will allow debate.
There are too many protected bears, causing too many problems. If enough
hikers (not necessarily thru's) DON'T carry bear cans, maybe enough violent
encounters will happen such that a hunting season of some sort will be
initiated. End of problem. (there will still be plenty of bears and people,
just less problems)

Just to put this into perspective, the world race walking record for
30 km (18.75 miles) is 2:01:44.1 by Italian Maurizio Damilano
10/3/92. Seems like Maurizio could knock off 20 miles while I'm
filtering water, stuffing my tarp and fiddling with my camera.
