Funny you should mention that. There are a number of structures in the
backcountry that have been removed, and which are being considered for
removal, some of which is quite controversial, as they've been there for a
long time, and have historical value.
However, to your point, there are mitigating factors, mainly what is
neccessary to administer the area. For example, it is absolutely
forbidden to land a helicopter in the wilderness.....unless an exemption
is granted for a SAR operation, and the exemptions are NOT automatically
granted. Here is the relevant portion of the Act:
(c) Except as specifically provided for in this Act, and subject to
existing private rights, there shall be no commercial enterprise and no
permanent road within any wilderness area designated by this Act and,
except as necessary to meet minimum requirements for the administration of
the area for the purpose of this Act (including measures required in
emergencies involving the health and safety of persons within the area),
there shall be no temporary road, no use of motor vehicles, motorized
equipment or motorboats, no landing of aircraft, no other form of
mechanical transport, and no structure or installation within any such
area.

Well lets see ---- Please let me know if I'm wrong but what about all the
back county Ranger Cabins -- Are they also going to be removed?
Now Lets see -- That means the following would need to be removed
along with the Bear Boxes....between Mt Whitney and Tuolumne Meadows.....
Crabtree Meadow
Tyndall Creek
Charlotte Lake
Rae Lakes
Le Conte Canyon
Evolution Valley
