Although I don't have any current information on these fires, I did hike from Hwy 36 to Humboldt
Summit on Saturday and Sunday. During Saturday the storms passed over as I was at the Butt
Mountain Junction. Rain was mixed with gravel size hail pellets. Lightning thundered all around
the trail. At one point, on mountainside across the valley, I actually saw lightning strike the
ground forming a large ball of smoke. I kept an eye on that spot as I walked the ridge line but
the fire never spread. The following day, Sunday, I noticed several fires off in the valleys. One in
particular, probably the one you are referring to was a safe distance from the trail and didn't
seem to be headed towards the trail. Of course the wind can change directions so today it might
be different. But as of yesterday the trail was a safe distance from the fires. Also, I would note
the fire would have to cut across several lava rock covered areas where the trees are spread out.
The fires did however obscure my view of Lassen Peak from the top of Butt Mountain.
BTW At the halfway marker I noticed the Lead Dog, Eric D., had already passed through. Very
impressive considered he blazed through all the snow in the High Sierras.
