I seem to recall a women a few years ago who was bit by a brown recluse spider while hiking the trail.  If I remember the details correctly, she took more then a week to fully recover at Hiker Heaven.  So to play it safe, I would have a can of Raid spider spray at the ready on your hip.  That way you can take them down while they are at least 20 feet away.  It also might work on trail pirates.
