If you come up from Sierra City, there is a good amount of wooded cover just
to the northeast side of the tower as you head down toward Sardine Lakes. 

There is some camping around Sardine Lakes (I think you need to decide to
head down to the Upper Lake early or wait until you reach the Lower Lake); 

The route up from near Packer Lake is enjoyable and it has a convenient
parking area.

I will be section hiking in Section M this summer, and have a friend who was
going to meet me near Hwy 49 and wanted to check out the Sierra Buttes
Lookout.  The guidebook mentions the lack of shade and the junction at the
jeep trail, so I'm curious if there is anywhere worthwhile to camp before
one starts the climb up there.  Thanks ahead of time for any info you can
provide me with!
