I hitched in on road 23 with some mushroom pickers. They said that road 88,
which you cross about 5 miles before 23, actually has more traffic since the
closure of 23. No matter how you get there, Trout Lake is a great trail
town.

We were in Trout Lake on September 9th this last year. We knew the road
from Trout Lake was closed beyond the PCT and that meant there would be
little traffic. So we arranged to be picked up there by the sister of
someone we hiked with. We stayed at Kelly's B&B, and he would have helped
us arrange a ride if we needed it.
When we got to the road, there was a couple who had been trying to hitch for
a couple of hours, with no luck. But they did eventually get a ride before
our friend's sister came, and someone else stopped to offer a ride a bit
later. There were some bow hunters using the road, so it does get some
traffic. The people in Trout Lake were very friendly, and it worked well to
resupply there, but you would have to be resigned to a possible long wait
for a ride.
