First, Happy New Year to everyone.
I took some Ron Cordes pocket emergency and survival literature I got from REI.com and copied it, but at a slightly reduced size on 8.5X11 inch paper front and back. I got about 10 pages on each side of the paper. I used three sheets of paper, but only 5 sides. The two guides went from 4.9 ounces to .7 ounces with the water proof sleeve I put them in. You can roll up the sleeve if you want too and put a rubber band around it for storage in your pack. I will not do that, since my belly pack has a neat pouch to slip the literature into. There is a lot of excellent info in these two guides.
Since I have a blank side on the third sheet of paper, I am thinking of putting a windchill and heat index chart on that side. I carry a weather instrument to give me windchill and heat index. I find this info very important to know on the trail.
Also, in the waterproof sleeve, I will carry other literature, like the phases of the moon for the hike time period, maps, guides, etc., etc.
I think this will be good reading material in the tent at night sometimes. I would never try to memorize all the info, so I would not have to carry the .7 ounces. But I guess some Super Ultra Lights might do that, but I doubt it. Even if you take some training classes, you will forget most everything in a few months if you do not use the survival and emergency info a lot.
I am very happy with this project. It turned out a lot better than I thought it would.
Your pal, Switchback the Trail Pirate
PS. Yes, much to the dismay of the many and the cheers of the few, I AM BACK!
