To fit more food in my cannister I take all my food out of it's original wrappers and repackage it in
Plastic Produce Bags (those bags you put your veges in in every produce section).  Not only can I compact in another day or two of food, but, as I use the bags and compact them, my trash also fits easily in the cannister and not in my backpack over night.
