"Want to avoid V V R and still carry less food weight? Stop 20 miles south
of V V R and resupply at Muir Trail Ranch. Then it's only 58 more miles (and
two passes) to Red's Meadow and the shuttle into Mammoth Lakes."

I hadn't been aware of a shuttle from Red's Meadow to Mammoth lakes --- do
you know how often that runs? Skipping VVR in favor of resupplying at both
Muir and Mammoth Lakes sounds like a good option

I found a reference to the shuttle here:

http://www.cityconcierge.com/mammoth-lakes/summer/reds-meadow.asp

It says the first shuttle leaves at 7:15, so likely there are a number of
them throughout the day?

I'd appreciate hearing from someone that's actually ridden this shuttle to
confirm that there are no issues, in particular that they allow you to buy a
round-trip ticket from Reds Meadow.

Oh wait, here's a catch: Muir Trail Ranch charges a whopping $50 to pick up
a package from the post office and hold it for you, per
http://www.muirtrailranch.com/resupply.html

VVR charges $15 per box. OTOH, VVR's ferry shuttle is $9 each way
(http://www.edisonlake.com/shuttle.htm), so to pick up a box at VVR you're
likely already out $15 + $18 = $33 before you spend a dime on anything else
at what's reported to be one of the most expensive places on the PCT. And
there are only two ferry departure times per day (or walk another 4.5 miles
each way). Muir Trail Ranch is just 1.5 miles off the PCT, so their $50
charge isn't looking quite so bad after all . !!
