Marcia,

I found your comments very interesting and I agree with you fully re: additional bear boxes.  This is also why I agree with the folks on this list-serve that have taken the minority view on the placement of water caches along the trail.  You mention the boxes "smooth the way" for hikers and that is no different than water caches.  The bear boxes allow hikers to travel without carrying the extra couple of pounds of the canister.  The water caches do much the same.
