[pct-l] Unprepared hikers

Two years ago while hiking the main trail to Whitney we passed a
couple--she with a traditional day pack and he with a big old beat up
suitcase. Yes, a suitcase. We passed them about half way between Outpost
and Trail Camps.

We summitted, and on the way down ran across them still heading up the
mountain (at this point without suitcase or day pack), just beginning the
100 switchbacks. By then it was after 2.

Naturally, they were the talk of the mountain. In various conversations
with others, we learned that the couple was on their third day lugging that
suitcase up the trail. It was so unusual that hikers were secretly taking
pictures of "Captain Suitcase" and posting them on the Whitney Portal
board. Subsequent postings on the board indicated they did make the top. So
I guess sheer determination and luck can sometimes overcome unpreparedness.

Subject: [pct-l] JMT maps

I got this link from the John Muir Trail Group. These maps are free
and it looks to me as if they are far better than the Harrison maps of
the same area. In 2007 I found the Harrison map fine for the trail,
but off the JMT, they were poor at best.
