I suggest reading Trail Safe, by Michael Bane, subtitled Averting
Threatening Human Behavior in the Outdoors. His book goes beyond the
idea that all we have to take along waterproof matches, and a
flashlight, etc. to be safe. Very useful info here, as he provides a
framework for sizing up potential situations and then addresses an
approach to dealing with them. Much of this book is also about
personal fear, and the book also covers issue of overreacting in
situations that are made a problem by what is in our own heads.
