I don't think there has been a year when the depth of snow in So Ca  
has been 9 feet(at lest since the last ice age).  I think what people  
might be trying to indicate is traveling through snow covered areas  
in So Ca can be difficult because of  of the terrain.  The snow here  
is not "friendly" usually quite icy and difficult to negotiate at  
times.  If you can ski the So Ca mountains you probably can ski any  
where. The Angeles Crest is considered one of the more rugged  
mountain ranges as well as the San Jacinto area(Fuller Ridge).  I  
have been over snow covered passes in July (in the Sierra) and felt a  
little unsure of myself as I made my way over them.  Maybe a word of  
caution to folks is better than no word at all.

Perhaps to the more confident ones cannot see what the problem is for  
those unsure of themselves.
