You asked "So what do I do with the canister. Hang it? Sit on it? Use it for a pillow?"
 
You make sure that anything that has an order (food or not) is in it.  This includes sunscreen, chapstick, etc.  Place it at least twenty five to fifty feet away from your tent.  Place it in a depression.  Many bears will recognize the canister for what it is and just walk away while others may try to fight with it a bit.  The bear may swat it around some and you want it to roll back down into the depression where you left it and not roll down the side of a mounitan or into a river and down stream.
