Sierra bears have been known to do all kinds of things to get to hanging food.  Whatever you do, don't just tie off a line.  The bears will find that.  The other thing about about hanging food, is that it becomes a sort of game or sport for the bears, with a great pay-off.  Then you have trained a bear to become a nascence and given it a death sentence.  Ask yourself this.  Would you go bear hunting? Is killing a bear something that you would do for your amusement?  If not, don't hang your food.  The poor bear may end up just as dead.  I don't think that is your intention, but it could well be the result.
