Tread = 3 feet
Lateral clearance = 8 feet
Vertical clearance = 10-12 feet (needed to provide clearance for horse
packers)
Max. grade = 15%, but 12% was desirable

"Width" depends upon your definition - tread itself or side 'clearances' - and other location factors...
Tread width should be 18" minimum to 24" maximum...
'Clearances' are 6' to 8' minimum above 3' from surface and 10' overhead...
Maximum grade is 15% "as a general rule", but can be steeper...
