Good afternoon, Aussie Dave,
Purell, and the old stove fuel Sterno, are similar products made primarily
of jellied alcohol. Both have some water in their formula but I don't know
how much. I think Purell has more water, plus a bunch of other things like
lotions and fragrances. When the product is burned some of the resulting
heat is robbed to vaporize the internal water which reduces its overall heat
output.
Purell does make a great flame for emergency fire starting, as does its
cousin Napalm which is jellied gasoline.
