Speaking for journals at postholer.com, some of our hikers are accessing 
their journals directly via internet enabled cell phones and others are 
using the 'emailed journal entry' feature with Blackberry's (cell) and 
Pocketmail (hardline or cell or sat-phone). This include photo's.

In SoCal cell reception is patchy, but you're likely to get reception at 
some point during the day.
