EXCELLENT POINT, David; especially your comment "Would it kill you to send some thank-you postcards from up the trail to the people who showed you love? It's a small gesture, but an important one."
A personal example - when I did CA section F, it was a very dry year and despite what I thought was careful planning on my part, I was totally out of water by the time I reached Kelso Valley Road. Mary Barcik's water cache was a life-saver. Her other Section F cache was also appreciated but unneeded. At 71 years old, she dutifully maintains two caches in a very dry strectch of trail. When I returned home, I sent her a thank-you note and purchased a 2 year membership for her in ALDHA-West.
It has been said - one bad apple can spoil the whole barrel. How many bad experiences with hikers does it take for a Trail Angel to decide it ain't worth it anymore? Even these superhuman people as still human.
ALL HAIL THE TRAIL ANGELS !
