That is, until you knock over the alcohol bottle that you left uncapped while you were setting up the stove, then no more fuel = sad hiker.  And didn't we decide last year (?) that alcohol stoves can be a fire hazard in SoCal if people aren't very, very careful with them?

I think that in terms of things that could possibly go wrong, I'd rate Esbit as most reliable, then canisters, then alcohol.  That said, Esbit and canisters have other drawbacks, and I like using stuff that I made myself, so I generally pack an alcohol stove on solo trips.
